triple crown fighter news...
TCF President Steve Rusich Interviewed in Gladiator!
by: Todd Hester

The sport of MMA is dominated by news about fighters,
coaches, trainers and promoters. But there is a
function that is equally important but which often goes
                                   unnoticed: The Fight Manager.

Part salesman, part talent scout, part psychologist and
part financial advisor, the fight manager is the bridge
between the front and the back end of the business
and business makes shows possible by bringing together the fighters you
see at events with the promoters who run them.  They are a key element in
what goes on behind the scenes in the months leading up to an event.  Steve
Rusich is one such unsung hero.

Coming off three straight fights in Japan, it’s probably
safe to say that welterweight Jason High will take a few
seconds to get used to fighting in front of the raucous
United States crowd that is sure to greet him when he
steps into the Octagon for the first time Wednesday
against Charlie Brenneman in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“The Japanese crowd is a lot different from any crowd,”
smiles High. “They’re really quiet, and even if something
happens, they’ll say something for a couple seconds and
then they’re quiet again. They’re a lot different from American crowds at any
sporting event, except for something like tennis.”

Eager welterweight eyeing redemption at MFC 24

Nathan Gunn had everything going for him in his MFC
debut  – that is until things went horribly wrong.

The welterweight prospect had a solid first round in his first
fight under the spotlight, well enough to earn him the nod
for taking the opening five minutes against veteran Pete
Spratt on the MFC 22: Payoff card. But Gunn made a fateful
error along the way. When he had Spratt in trouble, he
failed to put the hammer down and finish the fight.

Instead, Gunn let Spratt off the hook and paid for it dearly. The heavy-handed
Spratt blasted Gunn face-first to the canvas in Round 2, scoring the win, the
Knockout of the Night, and the MFC’s 2009 Knockout of the Year.

SCHEDULE

It’s not everyday that you get a message from top
ranked Black Belt Rodrigo Munduruca asking if you
can take a look at one of his guys, but that’s exactly
what Triple Crown Fighter top Agent Jake Hirsch
got a few weeks ago. “I’ve met Rodrigo a few times
at some MFC shows and did a Sinister sponsor for
him when he went to the World’s in Switzerland. I
definitely know the quality of guys he puts out so I knew I was going to be
checking out someone special”.

That “someone special” turned out be undefeated Winnipeg prospect Justin
Barnard, a heavy handed striker with a very impressive ground game.  Barnard
has a couple of fights that aren’t on his record, where he’s listed as 5-0.  Even
with an impressive resume like that, Barnard still remains humble as to what
goals he has in 2010, “I would like to improve all areas of my fight game,
particularly my strength and conditioning this year”.

Former Macleod resident managing top UFC stars

When Jake Hirsch first heard he was moving to
southern Alberta he was understandably discouraged.

After spending the first decade of life in California and
then just getting used to three years in Houston,
divorce brought him and his mother north to take over
the American Hotel in Fort Macleod.

Considering where he had grown up and some of the
people in the U.S. have about Canada, Hirsch thought
of the Great White North as an equivalent to Siberia.
But what he didn’t realize at the time was everything
that happened to him after he moved is really what has led him to where he is
today.

Spectacular finishes ignite MFC 24: Heat XC
Feb 27, 2010 By MFC Staff

Yves Edwards marked himself as the top contender for
the MFC lightweight belt yet it was a pair of spectacular
knockouts that stole the show at the Maximum Fighting
Championship’s MFC 24: Heat XC on Friday night at the
River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton,
    Alberta.

A flurry of punches from Edwards (37-15-1) dropped
opponent Derrick “The Eraser” Noble into his corner and
Edwards continued to rain down an array of strikes until
referee Vern Gorman stepped into to stop the
proceedings at 4:44 of Round 1 in the night’s main event.

“The Texas Gunslinger,” who was making his debut in the MFC, looked crisp
right from the start although Noble (25-13-1) did catch him with a sharp hook
in the early moments.

Triple Crown Fighter continues its successful run at
recruiting top Canadian talent with the recent signing of
Jason Gorny.  Gorny, who will be making his HEAT XC
debut on February 26, is slated to take on Elliot Duff who's
also looking to make a statement with this fight.

Gorny has spent his entire career as a free agent and is
now calling Triple Crown Fighter home, “I feel great about
signing with an agency, especially one as good as Triple
Crown Fighter and having someone like Jake Hirsch
    taking

care of me. I can finally now just focus on becoming an overall better and well
rounded fighter and not stress about finding a fight, how much I’ll make,
sponsorships etc. Just knowing you’re being taken care of is a huge stress
reliever!”

Anyone who’s driven the 435 kms from Fort McMurray,
Alberta to Edmonton understands that it isn’t the kind of
thing you do just for a fun night out. So how is it that Fort
McMurray-based MMA fighter Dwayne Lewis can come
down to fight in the Maximum Fighting Championship - in
the dead of a northern Canadian winter - and be followed
by a legion of almost 500 fans?

Easily recognizable as a deafeningly loud sea of black “Team Lewis” t-shirts
taking up most, if not all, of the floor seats at any MFC event, the grassroots
phenomenon known as the Lewis Army is the type of thing that makes the
Maximum Fighting Championship so special. How does something like this
start?

Former MFC champ replaces Nickels in Vindication
    lineup

As Dwayne Lewis has made his rapid rise up the MFC’s
light heavyweight ladder, each step has come with a
stiffer challenge. Seemingly now just a rung or two away
from a title shot should he keep his seven-fight winning
streak intact, Lewis will face a more difficult task that
originally expected at MFC 25: Vindication.

With Mike Nickels backing out of the previously announced bout, Lewis (11-4)
will now face former MFC light heavyweight champion Emanuel “The Hardcore
Kid” Newton on Friday, May 7 live on HDNet Fights from the Northlands Expo
Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

Something's going on at the Maximum Fighting
Championship that’s making our competitors nervous.
Maybe you caught a glimpse at MFC 20: Destined for
Greatness or MFC 22: Payoff. Derrick Noble and Carlo
Prater sure did. That something is Antonio "Mandingo"
McKee, a ferocious fighter who’s been mowing through
the ranks for over 10 years and is on a 7-year, 13-fight
unbeaten streak. What the other MMA promotions don’t
want you to know is that in Antonio McKee, the Maximum
Fighting Championship has one of the best fighters in
    the world.

In the early 2000s, word was circulating through the MMA (then known as NHB,
or "no holds barred") world about an aggressive fighter named Antonio McKee.

Gormley goes up against ‘Vanilla Gorilla’ at Vindication

A rare heavyweight fight has been added to the
undercard of MFC 25: Vindication taking place on Friday,
May 7 at the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton,
    Alberta.

Popular brawler Ryan “The Vanilla Gorilla” Fortin (3-2), who fights out of
Wetaskiwin, Alberta, takes on Chase Gormley (6-2) of Los Angeles, California,
in what should be a clash of heavy hitters looking for a big knockout.

Former MFC champ set for showdown with Lewis

All the talent in the world won’t get a fighter very far if he
doesn’t complement his skills with all the necessary
    intangibles.

Emanuel Newton is easily one of the MFC’s most-talented fighters with an
incredible amount of athleticism. But what Newton has lacked at this key time
in his career is the mental game plan to keep himself on the right track. That,
says trainer and MFC lightweight champion Antonio McKee, is about to
change.

Veteran excited by middleweight debut at Vindication

The new David Heath is a lot like the old David Heath.

    There’s just less of him.

Formerly a light heavyweight - and a slightly undersized one at that - Heath is
revamping himself in the guise of a middleweight, and he’ll get his first
opportunity to test himself in a main-card televised bout at MFC 25: Vindication.
